Clinical Ethics Consultation Benchmarking Collaborative

The Clinical Ethics Consultation Benchmarking Collaborative

The CECBC is now beginning its third year of data collection. In year one we collected consult data from 2021, and we recently completed data collection for 2022. We are now collecting consult data from 2023. By contributing data, you become a member of CECBC, which includes access to our annual report on trends in clinical ethics consultation and access to aggregate data you may use for benchmarking your institution. Scholars who are members of CECBC and interested in utilizing CECBC data are encouraged to propose academic studies to the Publication Group within the Collaborative.

Data entry is accomplished either through REDCap or by returning our downloadable Excel template. The Excel template may be preferable for those who have a large number of hospitals that wish to participate. Return completed spreadsheets to [email protected] using the naming convention “CECBC data collection_2023_[health system OR hospital name]”.

About the CECBC

As the name suggests, the Clinical Ethics Consultation Benchmarking Collaborative (CECBC) is a group of collaborators who want to learn more about clinical ethics practices in the United States, with the aim of improving the benchmarks by which we understand and assess our work. The project began as the result of a peer-to-peer problem-solving session during the 2022 UnConference sponsored by WellStar Health (shown below).

In the first year of data collection, 316 hospitals contributed consult data from 2021. The results were presented at the ASBH 2023 meeting in Baltimore. In our second year, we expanded and refined our collection instrument to capture more nuanced data about consultation practices. Over 350 hospitals participated by completing the instrument with their 2022 data.

We have opened data collection for 2023 consult data. Please click the link above to utilize a web-based electronic data capture instrument to enter data for January 1, 2023 – December, 31 2023. If you did not submit 2022 data and would like to do so, please contact Stowe Teti to learn about the options for doing so at [email protected].
